5 Warning Signs Your Mattress Needs Replacing

5 Warning Signs Your Mattress Needs Replacing

The quality of your mattress directly affects how well you sleep each night. According to research by the National Sleep Foundation, most Americans recognize the importance of a good mattress. A survey revealed that 92% of respondents agreed that a high-quality mattress is crucial for getting a restful night’s sleep.

The Better Sleep Council advises replacing your mattress every seven years, as it loses the comfort and support necessary for a good night’s rest. However, lifespan can vary depending on factors like material, frequency of use, and overall quality. So how can you tell when it’s time to shop for a new one?

Watch out for these five signs that your mattress may be past its prime:

1. You Wake Up Feeling Sore

If you’re waking up with stiffness or pain in your back or neck, your mattress might be to blame. Over time, mattresses lose their firmness and fail to offer the necessary support. Sagging in areas that should cushion your pressure points may result in discomfort and prevent you from feeling truly rested—even after a full night’s sleep.

We Recommend:
Tempurpedic Adapt Mattress. This isn’t ordinary memory foam. Each TEMPUR-Adapt mattress features unique layers of proprietary material originally developed by NASA that work together to support your body and relieve pressure.

2. Increased Allergy Symptoms

Do you notice more sneezing, a stuffy nose, or watery eyes when you wake up? Old mattresses can trap dust, dirt, and allergens over time, which may trigger allergy symptoms. Dust mites are a common culprit, particularly in traditional spring mattresses. If allergies are disrupting your sleep, it may be time to switch to a memory foam mattress, as its dense material resists dust mites and other allergens.

We Recommend:
GHF Sleep Mattress. Sleep easy on Grand's exclusive bedding collection, GHF Sleep. Each mattress is made in North Carolina using quality materials and expert craftsmanship. These budget-friendly mattresses provide a quality night's sleep without lost sleep over the price. Comfort foam is built into the quilt cover while the coil system underneath provides support. Some models feature additional memory foam support layers.

3. Frequent Tossing and Turning

Constantly shifting positions throughout the night could mean your mattress no longer properly supports your body. Without adequate pressure relief, your sleep becomes restless, and you may wake up feeling tired despite spending hours in bed.

We Recommend: Sealy Posturepedic Mattress. Inspired by work with orthopedic specialists, Posturepedic mattresses offer the right kind of support to enjoy a satisfying night’s sleep. Sealy pairs the best qualities of innerspring with memory foam to support every part of your body. This advanced mattress combines Sealy's most premium materials to deliver improved, best-of-both-worlds comfort.

4. Noticeable Sagging or Lumps

A sagging mattress or the appearance of lumps is a clear sign of wear and tear. Lumps form when padding shifts, creating uneven density, while sagging often occurs when the innerspring system wears down unevenly. Both issues compromise your spinal alignment and can cause chronic back pain. To extend the life of a mattress, it’s recommended to rotate and flip it regularly. However, replacement is the best solution once sagging and lumps set in.

We Recommend: Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress. The Perfect Sleeper provides pressure-relieving comfort and support while maintaining a balanced sleeping temperature for undisturbed sleep. The Custom Support Coil System creates exceptional support and reduced motion transfer. The BestEdge Form Encasement is an extra-deep foam rail made to help reduce edge roll-off and extend the sleep surface.

5. Persistent Creaking Sounds

A noisy mattress may point to an aging box spring. The box spring is crucial because it provides foundational support. If it creaks every time you move, it likely means the structure is weakened, which can prevent your mattress from offering the support your body needs. If you’re hearing a lot of creaking, it’s time to replace both the box spring and mattress.

We Recommend: Stearns & Foster MattressDesigned for supreme comfort, offering best-in-class materials. The premium, upholstery-grade fabrics ensure the timeless design lasts for years to come. Woven inset handles, copper air vents, and the hand-signed label from a master craftsman complete the look.

Final Thoughts

Your mattress plays a significant role in how well you rest, and ignoring the warning signs of wear can negatively affect your overall health. If you’re noticing any of these red flags, it’s time to consider upgrading to a new mattress. Better sleep begins with the right support—don’t settle for anything less!
